Welcome

White Horse Ethereal Cafe & Museum

This IS the spirit and soul of what was once brick and wood.

White Horse Cafe, an institution of Blackness in Southside Dothan Alabama, was the growing legacy of our ancestors.

Then in 1958

the state and federal governments

co-conspired to seize and burn

179 Black homes and businesses,

erasing Black wealth and

scattering Black families.

Another state-sanctioned erasure of identity and sanctuary.

This was the early days of what would come to be federally and stated funded urban renewal ploys that would displace well over 1.5 million Black people.

This digital space is a whisper of what once was.

We’re reaching back to unearth the legacy that was burned and buried. We’re turning up the dial and freeing the voices silenced and the stories hidden.

extremely delicate and light in a way that is too precious for the world
